Vancleave RLDS

At this time the nation was undergoing a severe financial depression, so the building had to be done by hard work and self-sacrifice. Timber, using Will Roger’s mill, were converted into lumber (the timber was donated by Brother Mack Hawley). Shingles for the roof were handmade, the members freely gave time and labor. Ten dollars, which bought nails, hardware, etc. was theonly cash used in the completion of the building.

On May 31, 1936 a dedication service was held. Apostle M. A. McConley gave the dedication address, later he wrote in a news brief in the Saints Herald of June 30, 1936:

"They have a fine little church, neat, well planned and erected in a very workmanlike manner, though no money was paid out for labor. Both men and women, non-members as well as members, helped in the various tasks which resulted in a finished building. The building is thirty by fifty feet, and arranged for four classrooms in addition to the auditorium. There is a playground outside, and all in all, the chruch plan is well adapted to meet the needs of the church in that community. The unity, consecration, and sacrifice of the Saints of Vancleave, led by their pastor, A. G. Miller, are commendable."

The afternoon of the dedication service Brother McConley, assisted by Brother C. F. David ordained Brother Frankiln Steiner to the office of High Priest. At that time, Brother Franklin Steiner was serving as the Mobile District President. Through most of the history of our Branch Bro. Steiner has indeed been a ‘Light unto the World’. He is mentioned so often it seems fitting we recognize a steadfast servant of God. Relating a story told by Brother Franklin Steiner:
